In order to select the best grinding wheels,you have to know their characteristics.
There are five characteristics of a grinding wheel: material, grain size, wheel grade, grain spacing, and bond type. They are indicated by codes on the wheel’s label.
1, Material and shortcode
Aluminum oxide (A)
Silicon carbide (S)
Diamond (D, MD, SD)
Cubic boron nitride (CBN)
Grinding wheels with diamond or CBN grains are called superabrasives. Grinding wheels with aluminum oxide (corundum), silicon carbide, or ceramic grains are called conventional abrasives.
2, grain size
From coarse grit to fine grit,the smaller the number is,the rougher;the larger,the finer.
3, Wheel grade
From A to Z, A is the softest grade and Z is the hardest grade.
determines how tightly the bond holds the abrasive. A to H for softer structure, I to P for moderately hard structure and Q to Z for hard structure. Grade affects almost all considerations of grinding, such as wheel speed, coolant flow, maximum and minimum feed rates, and grinding depth.
Hardness testing can use testing equipment,if you want to compare two grinding wheels hardness,you can use one grind another one,the ones which abrasive grains was separated from the wheel,it is the softer ones.
4,Grain spacing
Spacing or structure, from 1 (densest) to 16 (least dense).
5,Wheel bond
Wheel bond are the material used for holding the abrasives; affects finish, coolant, and minimum/maximum wheel speed.
