5 Principles of Hardness Selection of Grinding Wheel

Which hardness of grinding wheel shall we choose? Today I will tell you.

Hello everyone, I’m Brian. Welcome back to my channel, which constantly shares abrasive knowledge and handy abrasive tools.

Depending on the workpiece to be ground, the hardness of the wheel is also different.

The hardness here refers to the strength of the abrasive to be held by the bond and the difficulty of the abrasive to fall off.

When selecting grinding wheels, pay attention to the appropriate hardness.

If it is too hard, the blunt abrasive grains will not fall off in time,

and a lot of heat will be generated during grinding, which will burn the workpiece;

if the grinding wheel is too soft, the abrasive grains will fall off Fast, Which will affect the life of the grinding wheel.

The principle of hardness selection of  grinding wheel:

  1. The harder the workpiece, the softer the grinding wheel should be chosen.
  2. The larger the contact surface between the grinding wheel and the workpiece, the softer the grinding wheel should be chosen.
  3. A harder grinding wheel should be selected for fine grinding and profile grinding, which is conducive to maintaining the shape and accuracy of the grinding wheel.
  4. The relationship between the hardness of the grinding wheel and the particle size:

the finer the grinding wheel, the softer the grinding wheel should be selected.

in order to prevent the grinding wheel from being blocked by the grinding debris,

  1. When grinding softer materials such as non-ferrous metals, rubber, resin, etc., a softer grinding wheel should be used.
